Tulsa Moms’ Club: My Experience
When you become a parent, finding time for yourself and connecting with others can feel nearly impossible. Between balancing work, family, and the day-to-day tasks that come with raising little ones, it’s easy to feel isolated. That’s why, when a coworker mentioned the Tulsa Moms' Walking Club, I decided to give it a try. Little did I know, this simple invitation would lead me to a community of supportive moms and a refreshing way to connect—not just with others, but also with myself. Here's how this walking club became one of the highlights of my parenting journey.
I first heard about the Tulsa Moms’ Walking Club from a coworker in September 2023. She asked if I, along with another coworker, wanted to attend their upcoming Saturday walk in October. Normally, their walks were scheduled on Tuesdays at 9 a.m., but this one was on a weekend, so we’d all be able to join without missing work. We had planned to attend, but unfortunately, her son fell sick that day, and she couldn’t make it. My other coworker and I still went, and it was a wonderful experience. The weather was perfect for fall—neither too hot nor too cold.
The walk took place at the Gathering Place on Riverside, and the paths were just the right width for a group of moms with strollers. There were about 18 other moms who showed up, which was larger than I expected, but still small enough not to feel overwhelming. We walked a brief mile round-trip, and many moms stayed afterward to let their kids play. I enjoyed the event; it was a great way to get out and meet new people. The only downside was that the group didn’t hold many weekend walks for the rest of the year and into the summer of 2024.
After that first walk, I continued following the club’s Instagram account. They would post about their weekly meet-ups, and I noticed the group’s size kept growing! One of the last posts I saw featured a walk that had over 40 moms in attendance. Their social media following grew too—now over 2,000 followers. While 2,000 might not seem like a lot compared to bigger pages, when I first connected with them in September 2023, they only had about 300 followers. This isn’t a page selling products or promoting a flashy lifestyle. It’s purely about mom events—a safe, open space for parents of young children. They don’t run ads or profit from it, as far as I know. So, for a page like this to grow to 2,000 followers is something worth celebrating.
I kept an eye on their posts, hoping for another weekend walk I could attend. They had some meet-ups and playdates on Saturdays, but I always had prior commitments. When they posted their August schedule, I noticed they had a Tuesday walk at the end of the month that worked with my schedule. I took a half day off and asked a friend if she wanted to join me. We made it a plan.
This morning, the walk was on, and the weather was perfect! It wasn’t supposed to get too hot until later in the afternoon. The sun was shining, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I arrived at the Gathering Place around 8:50 a.m., set up our stroller, and packed Nolan’s endless snacks. Little by little, other moms began arriving. The host welcomed everyone and handed out raffle tickets for a drawing—two sourdough loaves donated by a mom who owns a local bakery. After the raffle and some updates, we started the walk. It was a quick mile down the trail; halfway through, we turned around and strolled back to the playgrounds.
The Gathering Place does an amazing job with its playgrounds. They have something for every age group. Since Nolan is still mostly crawling, the Volcano Land playground was perfect. It has soft floors and obstacles designed for toddlers and new walkers.
Nolan had a blast exploring, crawling around, and watching the other kids. I enjoyed reconnecting with the moms I had met during the walk. It’s incredible how something as simple as a walk can lead to deeper conversations—not just about parenting, but also about our hobbies, work, and tips on local events for kids. We stayed at the playground for about an hour afterward, enjoying the beautiful weather and positive environment.
This time attending the walk compared to back in October of 2023, the sense of community was even stronger. Seeing how much the group has grown and how friendships are forming made me appreciate having something like this in Tulsa. Meeting other moms who are also balancing work, family, and self-care feels like a gift. Even though I can’t always make the weekday walks, I’m grateful for the ones I’ve attended. It’s a great reminder of how important it is to find small moments to connect with others. The Tulsa Moms’ Club has been an amazing opportunity for me, and I’m excited to keep attending events whenever I can—and to watch the group grow for other moms as well.
